Which Irish networks have Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE?

Three, Vodafone, GoMo, Clear Mobile, Sky Mobile and Lidl Connect offer Wi-Fi calling, and eir lists it for bill pay. Most of the same networks offer VoLTE (4G calling). 48, Tesco Mobile and Virgin Media mention neither, and An Post Mobile's pages could not be checked. All need a compatible phone.

Why does Wi-Fi calling not work on my phone?

Usually because the phone is not on the network's supported list or the setting is off. Vodafone warns that phones bought from other networks or shops "might not support" Wi-Fi calling. Turn it on in your phone's settings, update the phone's software, and check the network's own phone list: Three, eir and Vodafone publish one.

Can you use Wi-Fi calling abroad?

It depends on the network. Three says Wi-Fi calling is "only available in the Republic of Ireland", and Vodafone says it does not work while roaming. eir says you can call and text over Wi-Fi anywhere in the world for the same price as at home. Lidl Connect says calls from abroad to Ireland cost nothing extra.

Which plans include 5G, and why might my phone only get 4G?

Most Irish networks now include 5G, but not on every plan: 48 only on its €12.99 plan, Tesco Mobile not on Prepay 15 or Data Plus, and Virgin Media's SIM Only plans work on 4G. Sky's pages say a 5G add-on is needed, and that 5G phones work on 4G until a software update.

Google says not every Pixel 4a (5G) or later works on every 5G network and to ask your operator; no Irish network names Pixel phones on its pages. If your phone shows 4G, check the plan includes 5G, that 5G is on in settings, and that the phone's software is up to date.

Do you need VoLTE after the 3G switch-off?

For calls on 4G, yes. As eir switches 3G off from October 2026, phones without VoLTE fall back to 2G for calls, which Lycamobile warns about, and lose mobile data on 3G. Vodafone switched 3G off in 2024. If calls keep dropping to a weak signal, check your phone supports VoLTE on your network.
